Bishop Diego baseball capped off a stellar turnaround regular season with a 9-1 win over Villanova Prep on Thursday to clinch a Frontier League championship.

The Cardinals end the regular season at 11-5 and 9-1 against league opponents, just one season after going 0-12 and finishing at the bottom of the Frontier League standings.

Bishop Diego’s league-championship-sealing win came on Senior Day, as the program honored its senior class of Ricky Fisher, David Timewell and Sean Monaghan.

The Cardinals took advantage of Villanova Prep miscues to build an early lead, scoring on an error in the second before plating three more in the third on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a two-run error. JJ Mercier also had an RBI sacrifice fly in the third.

Meanwhile, Timewell dominated on the mound for Bishop Diego. He allowed just one hit and struck out six in 5 ⅓ scoreless innings, while Fisher tossed a scoreless outing in relief.

Offensively, Timewell led the charge as well by going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Joaquin Adam drove in two runs of his own.

The Cardinals will now await their CIF-SS playoff pairings, which are released at the end of next week.
