Bishop Diego baseball took advantage of several free passes and a wild pitch to earn a 6-5 walk-off win over Santa Clara in extra innings on Tuesday in Santa Barbara.
With the game tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit by pitch. Santa Clara’s woes continued on the very next batter, as a wild pitch allowed Josh Lopez to come in to score and give Bishop Diego the win.
The first seven innings were a back-and-forth affair, as the Cardinals scored the first three runs but Santa Clara came roaring back and scored two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to send the game into extras.
Lopez drove in a pair of runs and scored twice for the Bishop Diego offense, while Ricky Fisher went 2-for-5 with two runs scored from the leadoff spot.
George Guzman turned in a strong start for the Cardinals, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out three in six innings. David Timewell then came in and allowed one unearned run and struck out six across the final three frames.
Bishop Diego will be on the road against Santa Clara next Friday.
