The top-seeded Bishop Diego girls basketball team won at Godinez, 37-33, in a CIF-SS 4A Division quarterfinal game on Wednesday night.

Galilea De La Cruz scored 10 points and Jiali Coronado added nine to lead the Cardinals (25-3), who will play at Notre Dame Academy (17-7) in the semifinals on Saturday in Los Angeles.

After leading 17-13 at halftime Bishop Diego had to withstand a tenacious Godinez team.

“Godinez was very aggressive and it felt like there were sjx players on the court for the,” said coach Jeff Burich.

Godinez took a 28-24 lead in the third quarter, but Bishop fought back. Citlali Morales made a three-pointer with about a minute left in the quarter put the Cardinals in front, 29-28, going into the fourth quarter.

Bishop went by by five (35-30) with about two minutes to go, but Godinez cut the margin to two.

“We turned the ball over and they had a chance to tie,” Burich said. “Gali got a steal at half court and made the layup with about 30 seconds for a 37-33 lead and we kept them from scoring again.

Burich praised the play of his defense, which shut down Godinez’s three-point shooting.

“Credit to these girls again for battling back and his time on the road,” he said.

“Siena Urzua played great again defensively and grabbed 10 rebounds to go with her 7 points.”
