Bishop Diego girls basketball kicked off Tri-Valley League play with a 56-31 victory over Santa Clara on Thursday.

The Cardinals won every quarter of the game en route to a win, including carrying a strong 28-13 point advantage into halftime.

Plenty of players got involved in the scoring for Bishop Diego, including four different players combining to make 10 three-pointers throughout the game.

“I was pleased with how we moved the ball,” Cardinals coach Jeff Burich said. “If we can get that many made threes, it’s pretty tough to lose.”

Of those players, Jaymi Coronado led the way with 18 total points while Galilea De La Cruz was right behind her with 17 to go along with an impressive defensive showing of five steals.

Leading the defensive attack were Jiali Coronado, Diana Mendez and Karla Mayren.

“I couldn’t ask for a better way to start our Tri-Valley League season,” Burich said.

The Cardinals (16-2, 1-0 TVL) will host a strong St. Bonaventure team on Tuesday at 6 p.m. inside the Brick House.

Oxnard 89, Santa Barbara 15

The Yellow Jackets handled the Dons en route to a big league win.

Turnovers proved costly and contributed to several easy scoring opportunities for the Yellowjackets,” Santa Barbara coach Andrew Butcher said.

“Despite the lopsided score, the game allowed several of the younger Don players valuable experience in handling a talented Oxnard team’s pressure defense as well as offensive transition.”

Santa Barbara will continue league play against Ventura on Tuesday.
