Bishop Diego girls basketball earned the Avalon Classic title with a 50-30 win over Pacifica Christian in the championship game on Wednesday.

The Cardinals took a 15-7 lead by the end of the first and continued to roll in the middle quarters, outscoring Pacifica Christian 29-10 to take a commanding 36-17 advantage into the fourth.

From there, Bishop Diego held on and cruised to the championship victory. Jaymi Coronado was named the Tournament MVP and Eden Wynne earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Wynne, a transfer from Dos Pueblos, continued the hot start to her season with a team-high 17 points. Meanwhile, Coronado and Luz Castro each dropped nine points.

“We did a much better job today defensively and moving the ball on offense,” Bishop Diego head coach Jeff Burich said. “It’s really fun to see how well the team has adapted to Eden’s skill set. Alyssa Chrestenson continues to play well on both ends of the court, and we feed off her energy.

“[Coronado] really does a great job getting people open and then knowing when to take over on certain possessions. Her defense on their point guard was phenomenal.”

The Cardinals (13-2) will take on Valley Christian on the road on Monday.
