Bishop Diego girls volleyball defended home court with a four-set win over Santa Paula on Wednesday inside the Brick House, 25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-9.
Sophie Otte led all scorers with 11 kills, five aces and one block in the victory. Meanwhile, Karina Urzua played three different positions and collected nine kills, five aces, six digs and 13 assists.
Olivia Leflang and Natalie Chan tallied six kills apiece, while Leflang ended the night with six digs and four aces of her own.
“After a few years of everyone we play knowing where the ball is going to go, it has been so fun working with our players to try new things, positions, and plays,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said.
“To have four players with five or more kills shows that we have options. We had five players play out of position tonight and they still found a way to have fun and play hard together.”
The Cardinals (3-1) will host Santa Barbara High for a non-league, crosstown matchup on Thursday at 6 p.m.
“Santa Paula played scrappy defense tonight, and our gym was really hot, so I’m grateful our kids got a chance to play in those conditions before we host Santa Barbara tomorrow night,” Bennett said.
“We expect the same hot conditions, two big crowds, and a fun environment to play a volleyball game in.”
