Bishop Diego Girls Volleyball’s Eliana Urzua turned in a solid performance in a season-opening 3-1 loss (20-25, 27-25, 21-25, 17-25) to Oak Park on Tuesday night.
“By this point of the year, we’ve usually played at least one scrimmage tournament,” head coach Dillan Bennet said. “This year, we opened the season with a tough match right out of the gate, and Oak Park got the best of us tonight.”
Urzua led the way with 19 kills, six aces and a block for a total of 26 points.
There were plenty of new faces throughout the lineup for the Cardinals in the season opener, with four players making their varsity debuts.
Some of those new faces included sophomore Avery Kwast, who added four kills and a handful of digs, and junior Anna Fittipaldi, who served up three aces.
“When you compete against big schools, you will have big tests, and we’re happy with many aspects of where we are as a team,” Bennet said. “The result tonight offers plenty to focus on in practice as we prepare for two tough non-league opponents and our annual tournament this weekend.”
The Cardinals (0-1) will take on Santa Barbara High on Thursday before hosting Valencia on Friday and the 27-team Cardinal Classic on Saturday.
