Bishop Diego captured the Coast Union Quad championship after going 2-0 on Saturday at Coast Union High in Cambria.
The Cardinals swept their way to victories over Coast Union (25-11, 25-15, 25-10) and Coastal Christian (25-14, 25-12, 25-22) in the early-season tournament.
“Every player stepped up and contributed in some way today,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “I’m very proud of the players’ performance today and how they were able to adapt to a different lineup in each of the six games we played.
“While we’re still learning about what this team can do on the court, the chemistry is exactly where we want it at this point in the season. This group is already one of my favorites to be around with their attitude, sense of humor, and positive energy.”
Sophie Otte led the Cardinals all day with 18 total kills, while Karina Urzua collected 10 kills, five aces and one block.
Mollie McGibben ended the day with 10 kills and a pair of aces, and Natalie Xhan dominated from the service line with 11 aces of her own.
Bishop Diego (2-1) will host Santa Paula in the Brick House on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before hosting Santa Barbara High on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
“We have a busy slate of matches next week to start our school year, and we’re excited to get our first wins of the season this weekend,” Bennett said.
Laguna Blanca @ Coast Union Quad
The Owls kicked off their season by splitting a doubleheader in the Coast Union Quad on Saturday.
Laguna Blanca began the day with a five-set loss to Coastal Christian (18-25, 25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 15-11) before bouncing back with a three-set sweep of Coast Union (25-9, 25-9, 25-10).
Vivi Keister and Lolayna Redmond led the charge in the back-and-forth loss with 11 kills and 15 digs, respectively.
Meanwhile, Lauren Kenny and Greta Alldredge tallied six and five kills, respectively, in the victory over Coast Union.
“It was great to get our first two matches under our belt and get some experience for our young team,” Laguna Blanca coach Tanner Stevens said. “There were lots of positives to take from the day and a lot to work on moving forward.
“Our freshman middles continue to improve each day and we can’t wait to see how this season progresses.”
The Owls (1-1) will host St. Joseph on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
