The Bishop Diego girls volleyball team drew Venice High of the L.A. City Section for the first round of the CIF State Volleyball Division 2 Tournament.

Venice is the runner-up of the City Section Open Division playoffs and the No. 8 seed in the 15-team Southern Regional.  Bishop Diego was seeded ninth after finishing as the runner-up of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.

The match will be played Tuesday at Venice at 6 p.m. The winner plays at top-seeded Bakersfield Christian on Thursday night. Bakersfield Christian lost in the Central Section Division 1 semifinals against Clovis West.

Venice lost a five-set match against Taft in the L.A. City Open Division final on Saturday. The Gondoliers are 35-5 on the season.

Bishop Diego (27-8) fell to Long Beach Poly in five sets in the CIF-SS Division 3 title match at Cerritos College on Saturday.

The State Division 2 Southern Regional bracket also includes Long Beach Poly and Taft. Poly got a first-round home match against Cypress, the team Bishop Diego defeated in the D3 semifinals.

Also in the bracket is Newbury Park, the Division 4 runner-up. The Panthers, which split two matches with Bishop Diego this season, are seeded 14th and play at the Bishop’s School of La Jolla in the first round.

The teams in the Southern Bracket represent the Southern, Central, L.A. City and San Diego sections of the CIF.

The Northern Bracket has 15 teams from the North Coast, Central Coast, Sac-Joaquin and San Francisco sections. San Ramon Valley of San Jose, a semifinalist in the North Coast Section Division 1, received the No. 1 seed and a bye in the North.

The second round of the state tournament is Thursday and the semifinals Saturday, Nov. 16 at host sites. The regional finals are Tuesday, Nov. 19, at host sites.

The State Championships are Saturday, Nov. 23, at Santiago Canyon College in Orange.
