Bishop Diego’s boys volleyball team will make its CIF State Tournament debut at the Brick House on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Fresno-Edison, the CIF-Central Section Division 2 runner-up.

The Cardinals, winners of the CIF-SS Division 5 championship — their first CIF boys volleyball title in program history — were seeded fourth in the tournament’s 16-team SoCal Regional. Edison is fifth.

Edison lost to Fresno Central East in the Central Section championship in three sets. The Tigers (28-11) are led by outside hitter Anthony Gossett, who has a season total of 273 kills and a .441 hitting percentage.

Seniors John Michael Flint and Damien Krautmann lead the attack for Bishop Diego and junior Luke Walters runs the show as the setter.

Tuesday’s winner advances to the regional semifinals on Thursday at the home of the higher seeded team. The regional final is on Saturday at a home site and the state championship is Saturday, May 30 at Fresno City College between the SoCal and NorCal Regional winners.

Central East is the top seed in the SoCal Regional and plays host to Foothill Tech in the opening round. In other matches, No. 2 Bonita Vista of San Diego hosts Culver City, and No.3  L.A. Taft welcomes San Diego’s Mission Bay.
