Bishop Diego’s defense overwhelmed Cate, leading the Cardinals to a 38-11 girls basketball win in the Bird Cage Classic at the Brick House on Thursday night.

“Citlali Morales set the tone defensively with five steals,” said coach Jeff Burich. “I was proud of our defense as a team. Jaymi and Jiali Coronado got into passing lanes and our guards worked very hard in the half court.”

Lily Simolon led the offense with 12 points and Galilea De La Cruz had 10 points.

“Gali and Lily bring tremendous energy, and it’s fun watching them rebound and get up the floor. Karla Mayren and Diana Mendez played aggressively off the bench,” said Burich.

The Cardinals improve to 6-1 and play Coastal Christian on Friday night.

Santa Maria 52, Carpinteria 42

Charlotte Cooney scored 15 points, Amarisse Camargo tallied 13 and Jamaica Cook added eight points for the Warriors in the loss at the Bird Cage Classic.

“We battled to the end but came up short,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales.

He praised the rebounding efforts of Lizbeth Alpizar and Cook.

The Warriors (4-6) play Carpinteria neighbor, Cate, on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
