Gabe Martinez had two hits, including a first-inning home run, for four RBI and Isaac Veal had three hits and three RBI to lead Bishop Diego in a 11-1 win over visiting Coastal Christian Thursday.
Jack Stowe, Kaden Guron and Austin Chrestensen all went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals, and Sam Kitt drove in two runs with a hit.
Starting pitcher Ryan Rheinschild went six innings for Bishop Diego, giving up five hits, one earned run, three walks and getting nine strikeouts. Gabe Martinez pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
“Ryan pitched really well, and our bats were hot today,” Cardinals coach Pete Stathopolous said. “We seem to be catching the wave at the right time and are excited to see what’s in store for these next two weeks.”
Tennis: Cate Stays Undefeated in TVL with Win over Laguna Blanca
The Cate boys stayed undefeated in Tri-Valley League play with a 17-1 win at Laguna Blanca Thursday, and can secure the league championship with a win next Tuesday against Thacher.
The Rams swept the singles sets, with junior Jengus Ercil at No. 1, senior Jinming Wang at No. 2, and sophomore Felipe Blanco at No. 3.
“Despite the score, this was actually one of our toughest matches,” Cate coach Jason Saltoun-Ebin said. “Many of the sets were very competitive, especially in doubles, and I’m really proud of the team for pulling through in almost all of them.”
In doubles, junior Will Vanica and sophomore Ethan Bloom at No. 1 were among the winners, as were freshmen Harry Su and Nate Newlove and No. 2.
Beach Volleyball: Santa Ynez Sweeps Ventura
The Santa Ynez girls beach volleyball team swept Ventura 3-0 in a league duel at home.
“Jayda Henrey and Gianna Pecile have really stepped up their game, playing some impressive volleyball,” Santa Ynez head coach Melissa Rogers said. “They dominated at the 1’s, winning 21-10, 21-6.
“After a slow start and a few adjustments, Kaki Allen and Sadie Lishman took care of business at the 2’s winning 14-21, 21-17, 15-4. In the 3’s position Hannah Allen and Cailin Glover won 22-24, 21-4, 15-11.”
