The Bishop Diego girls basketball struggled to make shots and dropped a 49-26 decision at San Diego-Madison in a Division 5 first-round game of the CIF State Tournament on Tuesday night.

“We struggled early and just couldn’t get into a rhythm,” said Bishop coach Jeff Burich, whose team finishes the year at 23-10 and CIF-SS Division 5A runner-up.

After Elliot Redkey scored the first basket of the game, the Cardinals didn’t make another basket until midway through the second quarter.

“Our shots weren’t falling and it affected how we played defense,” Burich said. “We just didn’t have the energy tonight that’s needed to advance in the State playoffs.”

Redkey led the Cardinals with 10 points.

“I’m proud of the season we had,” Burich said. “We won only 15 games the previous two years and this team finished 23-10 and runner-up in CIF. We bring a lot back next year. I’m proud of the careers of our seniors, Ariana Morones Sydney Naour and Julia De La Cruz.”
