The Bishop Diego girls split games on the first day of the Viewpoint Tournament Friday, beating host Viewpoint 25-18, 25-21 and losing to Archer 25-21, 21-25, 15-13.

The Cardinals move on to the tournament’s Gold Division in the playoff rounds, and face Chaminade at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In Friday’s games, Eliana Urzua totaled 20 kills, four aces, two blocks and nine digs. Mia Bazzani added nine kills, three aces and eight digs. Emma Coglizer had an ace and seven digs and Siena Urzua had four kills, two aces and five digs.

“We came out really slow against a good Archer team,” Bishop Diego coach Dillan Bennett said. “I was pleased with how Mia stepped up her hitting today early. I’m looking forward to that trend continuing because we need more people to put the ball away.

“I was also happy to have Siena back in the lineup. While she didn’t score as many points as others, she brings stability to the court while not putting too many points on the opponent’s side of the scoreboard, which was a big problem for us at times last night. We’re looking forward to another step up in competition tomorrow.”
