Bryan Trejo led a balanced attack for the Bishop Diego boys basketball team in a season-opening 78-36 victory over Pioneer Valley on Tuesday night at the Brick House Gym.

A four-year varsity player, Trejo scored 16 points. He recently joined the basketball team and playing for the football team that advanced to the CIF-SS Division 3 semifinals. He was a key player on last year’s CIF-champion basketball squad.

Sophomore Ryder Torres chipped in 14 points.

“All 11 available players scored,” said coach James Coronado. “I don’t remember the last time one of our teams had done that. We were sharing the ball and happy for each other, making plays all around.”

The Cardinals came out energized and raced to a 19-7 lead.

“We had a lot of energy to start, nervous energy which caused us to turn the ball over a lot at the beginning,” said Coronado. “But we settled down. I much rather have nervous energy then coming out flat, and we definitely weren’t flat.”
