Bishop Diego’s girls volleyball team won the Silver Division Championship at the Viewpoint Tournament on Saturday, posting a 3-2 record for the two days.
In Friday’s pool play, the Cardinals swept Archer, 12-25, 25-22, 15-9, then lost to Louisville 25-19, 23-25, 14-16, and in two sets to Alta Loma, 17-25, 15-25.
On Saturday, the Cardinals went undefeated without dropping a set against Heritage Christian and in a rematch against Archer to win the Silver Division.
Alina Urzua led the Cardinals with 32 kills, eight service aces, and four blocks, followed by Eliana Urzua with 33 kills and 10 blocks. Middles Kylie Zimmerman and Clara McDonald played every point of the tournament without relief and combined for 28 points.
“We headed into this event with the mindset that we would see some high level competition, to further prepare for league play beginning next week,” Bishop Diego coach Dillan Bennett said. “Despite being down two starters this weekend, we were two points away from a top four finish in a tournament full of D4 and D5 teams.
“I really like the way we are playing right now, and I feel like we got better with our scrappiness and our competitive attitude on the court.”
The Cardinals are now 10-6 overall, and host Providence on Tuesday to open Frontier League play.
