Alina Urzua became the first Bishop Diego student athlete to sign a college letter of intent for beach volleyball on Wednesday.
The senior is headed to Stetson University in Florida.
“I am beyond excited with my commitment,” she said. “I’ve worked very hard for this opportunity and signing today secured my childhood dream. They have everything I want and I’m very excited to attend Stetson this coming school year.”
“Bishop Diego is so proud of Alina and her commitment to play Division 1 beach volleyball at Stetson University,” Bishop coach Dillan Bennett said. “This is a true testament to Alina’s hard work and dedication to being the best she can be. She represents our school and our volleyball program with class as both a student and an athlete.”
In the fall, Urzua helped lead the Bishop Diego girls indoor volleyball team to a CIF-SS Division 7 championship and to the quarterfinal round of the CIF State Tournament.
She’ll be playing beach volleyball for the Cardinals this spring. It’ll be the inaugural season for girls beach volleyball as an official CIF sport.
Bennett said Alina will combine with her freshman sister, Eliana, as Bishop’s No. 1 team.
“The combination of Eliana’s physicality and Alina’s finesse and experience will make this one of the strongest pairs in town,” Bennett said. “These two are early TCAA pairs champion favorites.”
