The line was out the door and around the corner.
Goodland BBQ in Goleta has arrived.
The new restaurant in Old Town Goleta opened on Tuesday to heavy fanfare, with customers packing the place each day.
The restaurant, at 5725 Hollister Ave., specializes in hand-trimmed brisket seasoned with a special blend of salt and spice, slowly smoked for 12 to 16 hours with hickory and oak.
It also sells tri-tip, chicken, pulled pork, beef and pork ribs, and a variety of sandwiches. There’s even a bacon-wrapped hot dog.
Owner Tommy Ramirez and chef Tony Bones are behind the launch.
Bones is a fifth-generation Santa Barbara resident and worked in the family business at El Paseo and Somerset restaurants in the late 1970s and ’80s. He opened his own business in the photo and film industry and worked in Los Angeles, Detroit and Miami. Ramirez is the grandson of Pascual Gamboa, owner of the popular Pascual’s Mexican Restaurant on Victoria Street in Santa Barbara.
Bones said the restaurant’s tagline is, “Smokey good vibes.”
Santa Barbara doesn’t have “Texas BBQ.” Santa Barbara Chicken Ranch is popular, but it doesn’t serve brisket. Woodys BBQ closed late last year.
The restaurant’s interior is spacious, with a deep section of booths.
State Street Opening
Santa Barbara also has a new restaurant, Beddia Mia.
The restaurant took over the spot previously occupied by Mollie’s, at 1218 State St., and specializes in Sicilian cuisine.
“When in Sicily, eating spaghetti with ricci di mare (sea urchins) is a must. It’s a dish with very simple preparation, highlighting the buttery, eggy uni that smells intensely of the sea. Paired with the aromatic, lively, minerally and high-acidic white wine Carricante,” the company posted on Instagram.
The restaurant is open every day after 4 p.m., except Tuesdays.
Beauty Comes to Paseo Nuevo
Paseo Nuevo has a new retailer opening Saturday called Truth and Love Beauty, according to Mary Lynn Harms-Romo, marketing manager for the mall.
The Los Angeles-based company has a mission statement that says its “products are plastic-free, cruelty-free, full of enriching essential oils and organic botanicals. Giving you the best in natural hair and skin care.”
The company was founded by Lynn Venturella, who “had an overwhelming desire to help the oceans and animals that she always loved — and to create something beautiful along the way,” according to the company’s website.
Her goal was to create alternative beauty products “that were amazing to use and wouldn’t hurt you, the environment or any animals.”
One of the company’s main producs is the shampoo bar, so that “you’d never want to go back to your old bottled shampoo full of plastic and chemicals.”
The company also contributes some of its profits to charities, such as One Tree Planted.
Head Westward
Westward General, which specializes in “vintage and handmade goods for everyday life,” has opened at 160 W. Alamar Ave. in Santa Barbara.
The shop sells books, towels, bath items, jewelry, boots, clothing and other items inspired by the American West.
The woman-owned business is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
