The cleanup of Isla Vista continues.
The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved new fees for trash service in Isla Vista, along with expanded services for property owners.
Under the service changes, Isla Vista now will have weekly recycling service instead of every other week. The change will make Isla Vista the only unincorporated area where bundled service includes weekly recycling.
Residents also will have access to free weekly curbside service for bulky items year-round. The service will be available daily during the two weeks after the academic school year ends.
Additionally, MarBorg Industries will phase out the current 32-gallon cans and replace them with three larger cart sizes. The new carts come in 35-, 65- and 95-gallon sizes.
The new carts will have wheels and attached lids for better maneuverability. They also allow for more trash and hold large items more efficiently.
The service expansions are the latest attempt to address trash in Isla Vista. The area, which houses thousands of tenants in less than two square miles, has been dealing with trash overflowing out of bins into the streets.
In February, the Board of Supervisors responded to the issue by passing new trash service rules for Isla Vista.
The rules mandated a single waste account per property and updated the size and amount of trash containers required per property based on the number of bedrooms. It also made property owners and management responsible for paying for their properties’ trash service.
As part of the expanded service, multiple-unit and large single-unit residential rates will go up by an average of 5.79% based on the subscription level the resident chooses.
The new rate also accounts for mandatory in-place and backyard service. Residents will no longer be required to bring their carts to the curb because of the lack of parking and curb space throughout Isla Vista.
Commercial rates in Isla Vista will increase by an average of 3.74% and will see cans phased out for the wheeled carts.
However, commercial units will be able to receive trash and recycling service twice a week. The current rates only offer trash and recycling pickup once per week.
The new increases will take effect beginning July 1, which marks the beginning of the county’s fiscal year for 2026-27. The fiscal year ends on June 30, 2027.
The Board of Supervisors also unanimously approved fee increases for trash, recycling and yard waste on Tuesday.
Santa Barbara County will now pay MarBorg Recovery LP $34.03 per ton of solid waste and for sorting recyclables at the ReSource Center Material Recovery Facility.
The new changes will affect the Cuyama Valley and the county’s five unincorporated zones.
Zone One includes Montecito, Summerland and the unincorporated Carpinteria Valley. Zone Two includes part of unincorporated Santa Barbara and the Goleta Valley north of Highway 101.
Zone Three covers unincorporated parts of Santa Barbara and the Goleta Valley south of Highway 101, Hope Ranch, Mission Canyon, Isla Vista, New Cuyama and Ventucopa, the Gaviota Coast and San Marcos Pass/Highway 154 — east of Lake Cachuma.
Zone Four includes Lompoc and the unincorporated Lompoc Valley, Vandenberg Village and Mission Hills. Zone Five covers the Santa Maria Valley, including Orcutt, Los Alamos, Sisquoc and Casmalia.
Tipping fees, which are charges applied at waste centers or landfills, will increase 3.54% from $196.50 to $203.45 per ton at all county facilities. The fees will affect the first three zones and parts of Santa Ynez in Zone Four.
The first three zones will also see a 3.54% increase in recycling fees beginning in July. The cost for recycling will increase from $196.50 per ton to $203.45 per ton.
Organic waste pickup for those zones will increase 3.45%, from $58 to $60.
Lompoc portions of Zone Four will see a 4.55% increase that will raise the cost per ton of trash from $110 to $115.
Zone Five will see the largest increase of 15% because of the City of Santa Maria charging a higher tip fee. The new cost for this area will increase from $100 to $115.
Recycling costs in Zones Four and Five will increase 3.23%, raising the price from $124 per ton to $128 per ton.
The cost of organic waste will increase 3.01% in the Santa Ynez portion of Zone Four. The cost per ton of waste will increase from $50.84 to $52.37.
In Zone Five, the cost per ton of organic waste will increase 3.02%. Each ton will now cost $65.61 instead of $63.69.
