A fire at an oil facility west of Santa Maria on Monday appeared to be contained to a boiler.

At approximately 9 a.m., personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and Santa Maria Fire Department were dispatched to the 1600 block of Sinton Road, where Greka Energy has a facility, Capt. Daniel Bertucelli said.

The first crew to arrive reported seeing smoke coming from the boiler.

Firefighters were hoping that the fire would be extinguished after workers dealt with a second fuel shutoff valve, but crews initially were having difficulty accessing the valve, according to emergency dispatch reports.

The fire did not spread to the rest of the facility, which was safely evacuated, Bertucelli said.

An oil and gas investigator was called to the scene, he added.
