Authorities on Thursday released the name of the teenage boy who was struck by an Amtrak passenger train and killed the previous afternoon in Montecito.

The victim was Ryan Bradley Chapman, 15, of Santa Barbara, according to Raquel Zick, public information officer for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

Chapman was a student at Santa Barbara High School, Zick said. He was fatally injured shortly before 1:40 p.m. in the Fernald Point area.

The teen reportedly was among a group of youths who were walking along the tracks, headed to a birthday party nearby.

The high school will be opening a “compassion center” for students and their families from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in the Alumni Room, Zick said.
