Brothers Seb and Chris Reed combined for 39 points to propel a depleted Carpinteria High boys basketball team to a 54-45 win over visiting Fillmore in a Citrus Coast League game on Wednesday.

The Warriors bounced back from a slow start by outscoring the Flashes 10-0 in the second quarter to take the lead for good.

“They flipped the pace and pressure on the Flashes, winning the period 20-6 and heading into halftime up five, 27-22,” said coach Karl Fredrickson.

Carpinteria extended the lead to 11 in the third quarter and continued its solid play in the fourth quarter.

Seb Reed scored 26 points to lead all scores and Chris Reed chipped in 13.

The Warriors entered the game with five players sidelined due to sickness and injury, Fredrickson pointed out.

“That was a resilient and gritty win for us,” he said. “It’s always tough to stay 100% healthy this deep into the season. We’re banged up, battling sickness, but still fighting the fight. Tonight was one of our best defensive performances, and we did it in the face of all that. Tremendous maturity top to bottom. Nothing but love for all these Warriors.”

Carpinteria (7-9, 3-2 in the CCL) will host Dunn School in a non-league game on Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Oxnard 80, Dos Pueblos 30

The Chargers were outscored 24-8 in the first quarter in the Channel League loss at Oxnard, which moved into a tie for first place with Santa Barbara and San Marcos.

Oxnard’s trapping defense gave Dos Pueblos fits. The Yellowjackets (6-1 in league) capitalized on turnovers to expand their lead to 48-18 by halftime.

DP coach Joe Zamora praised the play of Shane Grant.

“Shane led us on both sides of the court,” he said.

Dos Pueblos (10-11, 2-5) plays at Buena on Friday.

Bishop Diego 65, Thacher 50

The Cardinals used a big third quarter to pull away from Thacher in a non-league game in Ojai.

Trailing 31-26 at the half, Bishop turned up its intensity and outscored the Toads 22-10 in the third quarter.

“We needed to be tougher on defense and I felt we were to start the third quarter,” said coach James Coronado. “Not only did the Cardinals start out playing great defense, but their ball movement got them some great looks. We have some guys that can score but ball movement has always been the key for us, so teams can’t focus on just one guy.

“We moved the ball well in the third quarter, hit some shots, and played defense. That’s a recipe for some good basketball.”

Jude Kadi led Bishop with 18 points and Crew Sjovold added 16.

The Cardinals (10-12) return to league action on Friday with a home game versus Dunn at 6 p.m.

Cate 56, Dunn 51

Junior Josh Butler scored 19 points and sophomore Jackson Steele added 12 points off the bench to help Cate hold off Dunn on Wednesday in Los Olivos.

Steele hit a pair of 3-pointers during a 21-point second quarter for the Rams, who led 27-24 at halftime.

The game was knotted up at 38-38 heading into the fourth, but the Rams pulled away late to earn the five-point win.

Nyoul Mangok led Dunn with 15 points and eight rebounds while Theo Anderson recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Girls Basketball

Cate couldn’t overcome a three-point first quarter and fell to Thacher, 42-30, in a Tri-Valley League girls basketball game at home.

“Despite a tough first quarter, we showed resilience, playing the next three quarters mostly even with the Toads,” said Cate coach Laura Moore.

Sam Jimenez scored 16 points to lead the Rams (3-6, 1-2).

Cate’s next game is Friday at rival Carpinteria.
