Bishop Diego boys basketball went on the road and came away with an impressive 55-39 win over Oxnard High on Saturday in Oxnard.
The Cardinals are now 11-3 on the season with the victory over the Yellow Jackets, who dropped to 11-5.
The backcourt duo of Rudy Blue and Crew Sjovold controlled the pace of play and led the Bishop Diego offense in the win with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
The Cardinal defense was also on full display with 17 total steals in the non-league victory.
Santa Barbara 54, Wiseburn-DaVinci 50
The Dons used a strong start to power themselves to a win over Wiseburn-DaVinci on Saturday.
Santa Barbara High led 17-8 after the opening quarter and extended its lead to 16 points in the second. Wiseburn-DaVinci didn’t go away quietly, but the Dons held on down the stretch for the win, thanks in part to two clutch free throws from Owen Horn.
Blake Lee and Levi Oakes each scored 14 points for Santa Barbara to lead the scoring effort.
“This was a tough game. It was our sixth game in nine days, and fatigue significantly affected shooting, as shown today,” Santa Barbara High head coach Greg Zuffelato said.
“But when that happens, you have to find other ways to win games, and we did. Winning games when things don’t go your way is a characteristic of a great team, which is what I feel we are.”
Ventura 49, Dos Pueblos 38
The Chargers dropped a Channel League matchup with the Cougars on Saturday in Ventura.
Dos Pueblos got out to a strong start, leading 12-8 after the first quarter and 21-19 heading into halftime. However, Ventura found its groove in the second half and pulled away for the win in the fourth.
The Charger offensive attack was led by a 12-point effort from Evan Pinsker.
“We had a hard time shooting the ball from the perimeter tonight,” Charger head coach Joe Zamora said. “I felt that Jordan Caratachea did a great job with his energy and defensive intensity. Iyad (Ahmad-Reda) did a good job in the paint and Coulter (Jay) played strongly for us.”
Dos Pueblos (10-5, 1-2 Channel League) will head across town to take on Santa Barbara High on Monday at 7 p.m.
Dunn 57, San Luis Obispo Classical 47
The Earwigs jumped out to an early lead and held on down the stretch to secure the win over San Luis Obispo Classical on Saturday.
Dunn dominated the first quarter to the tune of a 21-5 lead and fended off any SLO Classical comeback effort in the second half to earn the win.
Walker Vasquez did it all for the Earwigs, collecting 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Meanwhile, Tucker McMorrow tallied a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four steals.
Dunn (3-1) will host Coastal Christian on Monday.
Hueneme 46, Carpinteria High 44
The Warriors opened their Citrus Coast League schedule with a close loss to Hueneme on Saturday.
It was a back-and-forth first half as the two sides exchanged blows until Hueneme was up by one point heading into halftime.
Carpinteria found some momentum in the third quarter thanks to strong rebounding by Francisco Nova and Mason Brainerd, who helped build a 10-point lead.
However, Hueneme battled back into the game by limiting turnovers in the fourth to take a two-point lead with 20 seconds left.
Carpinteria had a chance to tie the game or take the lead, but a turnover gave the win to Hueneme.
