Laguna Blanca boys basketball picked up a big win over Villanova Prep by a score of 58-27 on Wednesday.
The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Owls against Villanova dating back to 2014.
After a back-and-forth first quarter where neither team pulled away, Laguna Blanca outscored the Wildcats 17-10 in the second quarter to take a 28-17 lead into the locker room.
Utilizing a full-court press defense, the Owls cruised to the win in the second half.
“Spencer Hlavaty, Josh Hansen and Mason Siegel really turned up the pressure a few notches when they played together,” Laguna Blanca coach Phillip Sherman said.
Ganden Walker poured in a career-high 25 points to lead the Owls offense. He also collected 13 rebounds and a trio of blocks. From the point guard position, Charlie Sheldon contributed 11 points.
Laguna Blanca is now 7-5 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Oxnard 71, Dos Pueblos 48
The Chargers struggled to contain the Oxnard offense en route to a loss.
“Oxnard did a really good job disrupting our offense and taking us out of what we were trying to execute,” Dos Pueblos coach Joe Zamora said. “Defensively we gave up a lot of interior looks that led to high-percentage shots.”
The Yellow Jackets got out to a 22-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, pulling away for the 23-point win.
Justin Stock once again led Dos Pueblos in scoring with 20 points.
“Justin did a good job attacking the basket and his teammates did a good job finding him,” Zamora said.
The Chargers (8-9, 1-5 Channel League) will host Buena on Friday at 7 p.m.
Del Sol 44, Providence 31
Providence dropped a road matchup to Del Sol on Wednesday.
“In the first half, we were playing solid defense, but just not hitting shots on offense,” Patriots coach Micah Ruiz said. “The third quarter came and we broke down a little bit on defense.
“Credit to Del Sol though, they were hitting all their shots.”
Micah Song registered a double-double in the loss with 13 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four assists.
Meanwhile, Abro Guinto tallied eight points and four assists.
“I’m proud of the kids who stepped up this week, with us being down two starters,” Ruiz said. “It’s another learning experience for these young kids and it will only benefit us in the long run.”
