San Marcos boys volleyball came up short in five sets in a non-league matchup against Valencia on the road on Wednesday.

The Royals started fast but struggled to finish down the stretch in the loss, 26-24, 25-22, 27-29, 23-25, 13-15.

San Marcos began the night with back-to-back set wins and nearly pulled out the road sweep, but the Vikings buckled down to survive the third set and used that momentum to carry them to the win.

Matteo Burdick led the Royals with 26 kills while Calvin Frisell ended the night with 21 of his own.

San Marcos (3-1) will be on the road against Loyola High on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Providence 3, Midland 0

The Patriots pulled out a sweeping win over Midland on Wednesday, 25-6, 25-16, 25-12.

Jordan LaBrie led Providence with seven kills while Cor Patterson tallied five aces in a 24-ace performance as a team.

“It was great to mark a win on the road against our first league opponent of the season,” Patriots head coach Dan Terry said. “The guys played great and we were able to get everyone some good reps out there.”

Providence will host Oak Grove next Wednesday at 3 p.m.
