Santa Barbara High boys volleyball mounted a five-set comeback victory over Valencia on the road in Tuesday’s season opener.

The Dons fell behind after three sets but captured back-to-back set wins to escape with the overall win, 25-17, 21-25, 15-25, 25-18, 15-11.

Chase Holdren played a crucial role in the final two games while setting the 5-1 offense, ending with 31 assists, seven digs and two blocks.

Hayes Costner led the Santa Barbara High offense with 15 kills while both Benicio Duarte and Jasper Bell hammered home nine kills.

Defensively, Jack Goligoski paced the Dons with 15 digs while Bell tallied five blocks at the net. Huxley McGetrick had a strong all-around night with 16 assists and eight digs while Jameson Savellano shined at the service line.

The Dons (1-0) will host Mira Costa next Tuesday inside J.R. Richards Gym.

Dos Pueblos 3, Arroyo Grande 0

The Chargers earned a road sweep of Arroyo Grande on Tuesday, 25-15, 25-14, 25-11.

“I’m proud of our focus from behind the line and on the defensive side,” Dos Pueblos head coach Ehren Hug said. “We were disciplined and scrappy, letting very few balls hit without an effort.”

Wyatt Silver, who ended with 20 assists, spread out the Charger offense as Noah Grant led with six kills and both Nathan Vincent and Kawin Ramko ended with five.

Meanwhile, Evan Daugherty racked up four kills, eight digs and four aces.

Dos Pueblos (3-0) will be on the road against Santa Ynez on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Bishop Diego 3, Valley Christian 0

The Cardinals took care of business in sweeping fashion against Valley Christian Academy on Tuesday, 25-16, 25-16, 25-13.

“It was great to get a lot of players in today and test our depth,” Bishop Diego student manager Dominic Herrera said. “We had the chance to see guys in different positions and lineups and really get a feel for how they perform in those roles.”

John Michael Flint continued his strong start to the season by leading the team with 12 kills and three aces. Meanwhile, Thomas Gaggs and Damien Krautmann tallied eight and seven kills, respectively.

Will Neubauer ended the night with 36 assists while Krautmann chipped in nine digs as well.

The Cardinals (5-0, 1-0 Tri-Valley) will host Foothill Tech for their home opener next Tuesday. 

Ventura 3, Carpinteria 1

The Warriors dropped a non-league matchup with the Cougars in four sets on Tuesday, 25-23, 16-25, 18-25, 22-25.

“We started strong, taking the first set, and every set after that was a battle,” Carpinteria High head coach Favian Muralles said. “The team played with heart, and I’m proud of the effort we put in throughout the match.”

Alan Maya turned in a strong defensive performance for the Warriors with 36 digs to go along with five kills. Meanwhile, Alariuziel Rodriguez ran the offense and collected 17 assists.

Carpinteria (2-1) will be on the road against Pacifica next week.
