Dos Pueblos boys water polo kicked off the Santa Barbara Invitational with a 13-9 victory over Carlsbad on Thursday at Elings Aquatic Center.
After the two sides were locked at 3-3 following the first quarter, the Chargers outscored Carlsbad 4-2 in the second to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
Dos Pueblos then held onto the lead for the rest of the game, holding Carlsbad to just four goals in the second half to secure the win.
Ben Fuhrer turned in a strong all-around performance, leading the team in both goals and steals with four of each.
Lucas Neushul also scored four goals, while Eli Carnaghe, Ty Abel, Channing Wigo, Adam Gelman and Grant Nelson scored one goal apiece.
Meanwhile, Koa Zertuche shined in the cage with seven blocks in the second half, two assists and a steal.
The Chargers (6-0) will be back in the pool on Friday at 12:05 p.m. against Yucaipa as the Santa Barbara Invitational rolls on. Yucaipa defeated San Marcos, 12-8, in a pre-tournament game on Thursday.
San Marcos opens tournament play at 2:15 p.m. against Laguna Beach, a 13-10 winner over Crean Lutheran in a play-in game on Thursday.
Carpinteria @ Malibu Tournament
The Warriors began the Malibu tournament with a pair of wins over Villanova Prep and Malibu on Thursday.
Carpinteria began the day with a 14-5 victory over Villanova Prep, thanks in part to a hat trick from Sky Korling and strong defense down the stretch.
The Warrior defensive unit totaled five turnovers down the stretch to pull out the win.
“The boys got off to a little rough start but their offense shined through once we got into a flow of our ball movement,” Carpinteria High head coach Russell Russo-LeVasseur said. “We took control of the game firmly but Villanova tested us early on which was a wake up call for our starters.”
Later in the day, the Warriors scored 14 more goals in a 14-5 victory over tournament host Malibu High.
Carpinteria raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back en route to the lopsided win.
Stefano Picoletti ended the matchup with six blocks and three assists, while Jake Ehlers got the team off to a strong start with two goals and two assists in the opening half.
“We didn’t back down at any point in our attack and our offense shined,” Russo-LeVasseur said. “I’m excited to see what our boys can do after with some of the other top tier D3 and D2 teams as we get to the peak of our season.”
