Dos Pueblos boys water polo split its first two games of the South Coast Tournament on Thursday in Orange County.

The Chargers began the day with a 12-8 victory over Westlake High before falling to Santa Margarita Catholic by a score of 16-11.

Dos Pueblos got out to a strong start against Westlake, taking a 5-2 lead in the first and never looking back en route to the win.

The sophomore duo of Channing Wigo and Koa Zertuche led the way with four goals and 10 blocks, respectively. Senior Grant Nelson and freshman Wyatt Warkentin each scored twice.

In the loss to Santa Margarita Catholic, Nelson tallied four goals and four exclusions earned, while Lucas Neushul scored three times and Warkentin, Wigo, Adam Gelman and Tyler Racine all scored once. Zertuche had five blocks.

The Chargers will take on Laguna Beach on Friday in a rematch of last week’s Santa Barbara Invitational championship.

Mira Costa 14, San Marcos 7 (South Coast Tourn.)

The Royals dropped their opening game of the South Coast Tournament to Mira Costa on Thursday.

It was a tight matchup early, as Mira Costa held a one-goal lead after the first quarter and at halftime. However, San Marcos scored just one goal in the second half to allow Mira Costa to pull away for the win.

The Royals will continue their tournament on Friday.

Santa Barbara High 13, Santa Ynez 9

The Dons earned a non-league victory over the Pirates on Thursday in Santa Barbara.

Paolo Borgioli was a machine on the offensive end, tallying a team-high six goals. Meanwhile, Jack Fulbeck was a force with four goals and three assists.

Mason Walsh also had a big game with two goals, three assists and three steals, while Luke Karman scored once to round out the scoring.

Santa Barbara High will be off until next weekend, when it competes in the Saddleback Tournament.
