Junior Briana Castro hit a two-run homer in the third inning and that was all Allie Speshyock needed as she pitched Dos Pueblos to the outright Channel League championship on Senior Day with a 4-1 victory over Lompoc on Monday at Dale Okinaka Field.
The Siena-bound Speshyock struck out eight, helping the Chargers improve 13-0-1 in league and 17-6-1 overall.
“We came out with a lot of emotion today,” coach Mike Gerken said. “We really wanted to give the seniors (Josy Uyesaka, Allie Speshyock and Jenny Nichols) a proper regular season send-off. We are all so happy for Josy, Allie and Jenny and hope we can give them another 5 or 6 games.
“The girls really earned this league title. It wasn’t easy, but they never gave up when faced with adversity.”
Castro went 2 for 3 and Allison Gaspar was 2-2 with two runs scored.
“Briana is hitting the ball so hard right now,” Gerken said. “After the game she told me (the home run) was about as far as she’s ever hit one.”
On defense, Mykenzie Ramirez was solid behind the plate, blocking numerous balls in the dirt with runners on base. Gasper and Ali Borden made some tough catches in the outfield.
Dos Pueblos plays at Lompoc on Wednesday.
