Byrce Warrecker exploded for 30 points to power the Santa Barbara High boys basketball team to a 70-60 Channel League win at Dos Pueblos on Wednesday night.

The Dons move to 5-0 in league while the Chargers fall to 2-3.

In the first quarter, DP shooting guard Baylor Huyck dropped a trio of three-point shots, accounting for 9 of the team’s 11 first-quarter points. He continued his three-point sharp shooting in the second half, downing two in each quarter, and finished the game with 25 points.

“Bryce matched him point for point, but we don’t want him matching people, we want him beating people,” said Santa Barbara coach Corey Adam.

“(Baylor’s) the focal point of our team,” said DP coach Joe Zamora. “Great role model, team player. He’s able to turn our losses into successes.”

The Chargers nearly matched Santa Barbara’s pace of play through the first 16 minutes, trailing by just five (31-26) at halftime.

“We can hang with any team,” said Huyck.

The Dons pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Chargers 22-16 to take a 53-42 lead. Santa Barbara led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter.

Santa Barbara captain and point guard Stephen Davis scored 14 points.

Davis attended junior high with Huyck, who said he enjoys competing against his friend.

“Always love playing against him. I’ve been playing against that team my whole life,” said Huyck.

Even though his team finished the first round of league play undefeated, Adam said there’s still work to do.

“We’re never content. None of us should be content,” he said. “We haven’t had a perfect game yet.”

Santa Barbara (13-7 overall) begins the second round of league play against San Marcos on Saturday at SBCC. Dos Pueblos plays Friday against Santa Ynez.
