Gustavo Russo – The Barishnikov of Tango
Let me tell you a story:
It was the 80s, and Tango had been left for dead.
It was just a memory.
And from nowhere—well, from Paris, actually—came the idea to present a Tango musical. It was 1983. In Argentina, democracy was coming back.
A group of artists took a risk by putting the show together… without any money. They made it to Paris in an Argentine military plane that “dropped them off” on its way to Germany.
Carlos Segovia, together with Juan Carlos Copes, MarÃa Nieves, El Sexteto Mayor, and others, set out to present a Tango not for export—the real beauty and elegance of the popular, social dance.
The show was tremendously successful and went on to perform on Broadway for over a decade. It is credited with rekindling the tango spark, inspiring dance halls all over the world. It was followed by a number of international shows, such as Forever Tango.
That is where our friend Gustavo comes into the picture. He was an adolescent at the time, but he was called to the movement and, in 1988, started dancing in Juan Carlos Copes’ company in a show called Tango Tango. He was the first dance partner of the now famous Alejandra Mantiñán, and later branched off to start his own successful career as a choreographer.

THE PLAN
The point is… we get to host a legend on our lovely shores!
Gustavo and Florencia will be arriving in Santa Barbara late Saturday night. They will teach on Sunday, and afterwards, we’ll celebrate the magical two years of Magnética with a Practica at the studio.
They will return each Monday for four consecutive Mondays to teach at the Monday Practica. Monday Practica will be $25 on those days: April 28, May 5, 12, and 19.
Our goal is to dive into Sacadas (thank you, Alejandro Deocca, for the suggestion!).
We’ll start by building our Molinetes and Giros (YES! They are not the same—just ask Gustavo), and then move on to more complex moves based on them.
