Answer: Californians for Population Stabilization. CAPS works to formulate and advance policies and programs designed to stabilize the population of California, the US, and the world at levels that will preserve the environment and a good quality of life for all.

Q: How long has your nonprofit been in service and whom was it started by?

A: CAPS was founded in 1986 by a combination of environmentalists, scientists and members of Zero Population Growth (ZPG), now Population Connection.

A: CAPS founders were inspired to shed light on the nexus between human behavior and environmental impact.

Q: How is your nonprofit primarily funded and what are your greatest needs?

A: CAPS is a 501 (c)(3) and relies on donations. Our public education and awareness programs require a majority of the support we receive.

A: CAPS utilizes funding through print and digital projects, informational ad campaigns, and legislative tools that bridge constituents with their legislators.

A: CAPS participates annually during Earth Day and Giving Tuesday. We pair critical and compelling information and original content with year-end appeals and through our twice annual newsletter.

Q: Describe your organizations staffing models and internal operations. Has anything changed since the start of your nonprofit?

A: We have an engaged Board of Directors, Advisory Board and an internal organizational structure that produces high level output while maintaining a small staff and overhead.

Q: How do people get involved/volunteer for your nonprofit?

A: Folks can reach out by phone, email or social media.

Q: What makes your nonprofit different from others?

A: We play a unique role among like organizations as we articulate policies that address all aspects of human impact on the environment.

Q: What is one best kept secret or fun fact about your nonprofit that not everyone knows?

A: We are planning a speaker series slated for 2023 on topics including population, consumption, overshoot, open spaces, wildfires, depleted resources and ways forward that we hope will prompt Californians and US and world citizens to take action in the interest of leaving a better planet for future generations.

Q: Can you share one or two stories of individuals whose lives have been changed because of your organization?

A: We have long-time supporters that have stood by us through the decades and support our good works in a variety of different ways for the simple desire they have to leave a better planet for future generations.

Q:  How does the work of your nonprofit get communicated to the public?

A: Through digital campaigns, social media, grassroots projects, newsletters, issues pieces, legislative alerts and email broadcasts; CAPS communicates and engages with the public to further awareness and cultivate engagement.

Q: Why should donors trust your organization and are there other ways to help outside of donations?

A: We have a Platinum seal of transparency through Guide Star; the highest level an organization can acquire upon meeting a scrupulous set of criteria.

Q: Can you tell us one short-term goal AND one long-term goal that your nonprofit has for the next year?

A: We are excited to launch a speaker series next year and hopefully make it a recurring event in the long term.
