Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday morning in Santa Maria that sent one car into a business and sparked a fire.

At approximately 7:40 a.m., personnel from the Santa Maria Fire Department responded to the incident at 214 W. Main St., Battalion Chief Anthony Morales said.

One vehicle landed inside a business along West Main Street where the Honda ignited on fire while inside the front of the building.

“The fire was isolated to the vehicle at the entrance of the business, with fire causing surface damage to the exterior of the structure and the vehicle,” Morales said.

A commercial structure fire response was initiated.

“The crews made a quick aggressive attack on the vehicle and the business,” Morales said.

The fire did not extend to nearby businesses in some of the city’s oldest buildings.

Two occupants of one of the vehicles involved were transported to Marian Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries, Morales said.

It wasn’t immediately known if the fire alarm and smoke detectors in the building activated.

Representatives of the Santa Maria Building Division were notified so they could assess the status of the structure following the crash and fire, Morales added.

Officers with the Santa Maria Police Department were investigating the circumstances surrounding the vehicle crash as a felony hit and run, since a driver left the scene.
