Carpinteria baseball standout Erich Goebel has signed a letter of intent to attend and play baseball at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa.

Goebel was a four-year starter for the Warriors, and earned a spot on the Citrus Coast League All-League Team in consecutive years. He led Carpinteria in almost every offensive category while covering vast territory in center field.

“I couldn’t be more grateful for the four years I had at Carpinteria,” Goebel said. “Coach (Pat) Cooney has created a program that allows its players to mature both mentally and physically throughout their careers. I’m really lucky to have ended up here.”

“As Erich went, we went,” coach Cooney said. “When he was performing, the Warriors were winning, and I’m certain that he will have the same effect on the Rams.

“He leaves enormous shoes to fill but he has been a model for his younger teammates and the impression that he and his family left on our program will not fade. Cornell has found a nugget and we just became Ram fans!”

The NCAA Division III Cornell Rams compete in the Midwest Conference, where this season they compiled a record of 21-19 under first-year coach Rob Dombrowski.

Goebel expressed his excitement at the signing event, held at Carpinteria’s Calderwood Field.

“I’m super excited to start a career at Cornell,” Goebel said. “Coach Dombrowski is a great coach who has recruited a ton of talent. It’s going to be a fun four years.”
