Carpinteria High girls tennis claimed the top spot in the Citrus Coast League with an 11-7 win over Nordhoff on Tuesday in Carpinteria.
The Warriors and Rangers each entered the day atop the league standings at 3-0, with the Warriors emerging victorious thanks to eight doubles points.
“We had a poor warm-up which seemed to carry over to the first round unfortunately. We were out of sync, flat and a bit careless, for lack of a better word, and we were facing a team who came to win,” Carpinteria High head coach Charles Bryant said. “Our character started to show up, and we fought our way out of our self-dug hole with much better second and third rounds.”
Carpinteria’s Aubrey Alcaraz turned in one of her best performances of the year, securing three singles victories.
In doubles, both Emily Banks/Cailyn Gillen and Caroline Cooney/Yoselyn Aguirre each went 3-0, while the duo of Ariana Cruz/Sarai Mota went 2-1. Banks/Gillen were particularly dominant, dropping just one game.
“Overall, I told the girls we escaped today,” Bryant said. “They all seemed to understand what was at stake, and they each stepped it up in rounds two and three. They knew we were down and then they showed what true competitors they are.”
The Warriors (7-5, 4-0 CCL) will host Fillmore on Tuesday.
