Carpinteria High girls tennis pulled out a 10-8 non-league win over local rival Santa Barbara High on Friday in Carpinteria.

“We played our best overall match today and stepped up to the competition,” Carpinteria High head coach Charles Bryant said. “I was proud of how we found ways to win, found ways to stay competitive and found ways to believe in themselves and their teammates.”

The Warriors found success in singles and doubles en route to the win, earning five points in both.

Carpinteria High’s Aubrey Alcaraz and Nathalie Hernandez each went 2-1 in singles, while Ariana Cruz added one win of her own.

Meanwhile, the Warrior duo of Caroline Cooney/Cailyn Gillen swept its way to a 3-0 day, and both Yoselyn Aguirre/Naima Palacio and Sadie West/Emily Banks went 1-2.

“Overall, it was a good win for us against a top program,” Bryant said. “We were aided in the fact that they were missing some starters but I am still very happy with how we stepped up and performed.”

As for the Dons, Hali Wight swept her singles matchups while losing just three games across the three sets. Alex Sedlar got in the win column as well in her first-ever varsity match.

In the doubles lineup, the Santa Barbara High pairings of Keren Monroy/Kate Krautman and Ryan Briggs/Iris Heckes each turned in 2-1 performances.

“Even down eight players, six of them starters, the Dons were on multiple occasions one point away from victory, which shows the strength and determination of this team to be adaptable and step up when their name is called to do so regardless of the day, opposition, scenario, roster or lineup,” Santa Barbara High head coach Shane Carmody said.

Carpinteria High (6-5, 3-0 Citrus Coast League) will host Nordhoff next week, while the Dons (4-5, 4-1 Channel League) will host Dos Pueblos on Tuesday.
