Carpinteria High track & field hosted hundreds of athletes from small high schools for the 106th annual Russell Cup on Saturday at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium.
The Warrior girls swept the competition, beating out Santa Ynez 62-60 in the varsity meet and earning the sweepstakes title with a strong frosh/soph performance as well.
Meanwhile, Nipomo captured the boys meet championship and Santa Ynez claimed the boys sweepstakes title. Santa Ynez was the grand sweepstakes winner, tallying 278 points compared to Carpinteria’s 245.
“It was a great day for Carpinteria. The Warriors always rise to the occasion on Russell Cup day,” Carpinteria High head coach Van Latham said. “We had numerous PR performances and brought home quite a few medals in addition to the team trophies.
“The meet was a great success. I would like to thank all the great volunteers who made for another outstanding meet.”

The Warrior girls 4×100 relay team of Isla Moore, Giarys Gomez, Vivian Huskins and Kaydance Gardner broke their own school record with a time of 50.13 seconds and a second-place finish.
Meanwhile, Gardner, Moore, Gomez and Izzy Scott combined to take second in the 4×400 relay with a season-best time of 4:14.50. In the brand-new 4×800 relay race, Mila Martins, Cailyn Gillen, Jocelyn Jimenez and Kiana Kiah came in third with a time of 10:46.48.
Huskins also shined as an individual, breaking her own school record in the 200-meter race at 25.74 seconds for fourth place and taking fourth in the 100-meter at 12.68 seconds.
Meanwhile, Gardner came in second in the 400-meter at 1:01.17 and Scott ran a personal-best time of 49.60 seconds to claim second in the 300-meter hurdles.
Leighla Richter joined the individual girls standouts with a personal-best of 18.43 seconds to take fourth in the 100 hurdles. Caroline Cooney rounded out the Warrior girls by winning the triple jump and coming in second in the 200-meter race.
On the boys side, the Warriors finished the day with 21 team points to record a 13th-place finish.
Jeremy Haines was the lone medalist for the Carpinteria boys, clearing a height of 9-9 in the pole vault to finish in fourth place.
Eli Perez (shot put, 43-1) and Max Soto (3,200-meter, 10:03.92) each placed fifth in their events, while the 4×100 relay team of Cesar Jaime, Jeshua Magana, Isaac Neri and Owen Reeves claimed fifth with a time of 45.50 seconds.
Providence
Joshua Small and Elsabet Schlobohm represented the Patriots at the Russell Cup on Saturday in Carpinteria.
Schlobohm led the charge by defending her title in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.8 seconds and crossing the finish line third in the 400-meter dash to earn 16 team points.
Small made his qualifying debut in the frosh/soph division and finished the 300-meter hurdles in 12th place.
“I’m so proud of the hard work and determination our runners showed to get qualified in the first place and then perform so well,” Providence head coach Lindsay Lettow said. “Taking first place in the hurdles is really special for Elsabet, who is a longtime Carpinterian.
“At the Russell Cup, she gets to see and compete against long-time friends from other schools, which makes things really fun.”
