The Carpinteria High girls track & field squad captured the team title at the 105th Annual Russell Cup on Saturday in Carpinteria.
The Warrior girls scored a total of 111 points to lead the field, finishing ahead of second-place Morro Bay (98). Meanwhile, the Carpinteria High boys took 11th place with 27 points. Santa Ynez High won the boys division with 74 points.
“It was another great Russell Cup day for Carpinteria,” Warriors head coach Van Latham said. “The team responded to the excitement of the Russell Cup, the excellent competition and the nice weather with numerous personal records.
“Kudos to all of the volunteers who made for a successful day.”
Melanie Avalos was the leading scorer for the Carpinteria High girls, winning the shot put with a throw of 34-11.25 and taking second place in the discus at 117-6. Both throws were personal records.
“Melanie is incredibly strong,” Latham said. “She has always had the capability to throw far. She is finding her groove at the right time.”
Meanwhile, Averi Alexander was a big contributor for the Warriors, winning the triple jump at 35-10.75 and finishing third in the long jump with a season-best 15-11.25.
Giarys Gomez was the other individual medalist for Carpinteria, placing third in the 400 with a time of 1:04.30.
Alexander and Gomez were joined by Vivian Huskins and Anna Morrison to take fourth place in the 4×100 relay team.
On the boys side, Nathan Carillo led the way with a third-place finish in the pole vault with a 9-6 clearance and a season-best time of 45.63 seconds to take fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.
Sawyer Kelly tallied fourth place in the triple jump at 37-11.5 and Jeremy Haines finished fourth in the pole vault at 9-6.
