Carpinteria girls water polo split their opening day matchups against Buena Park and Beaumont at the Buena Friendlies Tournament on Friday.
Buena Park 13, Carpinteria 4
The Warriors opened their weekend with a loss to a strong Buena Park team.
“It was a humbling game for the Warriors in so many ways,” Carpinteria coach Jon Otsuki said.
Buena Park led by as many as 11 goals before Carpinteria found the back of the cage a few times in the final quarter.
Lilli Nemetz scored twice to lead the Warriors while Hazel Dugre and Caden Lemere each scored.
Carpinteria 8, Beaumont 7 (2OT)
The Warriors bounced back with a dramatic overtime victory over Beaumont.
However, it was all Beaumont early, as they held a 4-1 lead midway through the second quarter and seemed to be in control of the game.
Carpinteria then began to chip away at the lead with Dugre and Giulia Piccoletti scoring to cut the advantage down to 4-3.
The score then went back and forth until the Warriors found themselves trailing 7-6 with 42 seconds left in the game when Lemere found an opening and scored to knot the game up at the end of regulation.
After neither team scored in the first three-minute overtime quarter, the game was sent to a sudden-death overtime quarter.
There, Nemetz hit Lemere six meters away from the cage and she buried the shot, securing the win.
“I had told Caden to find that gap in the defense,” Otsuki said. “It was a great win for the program and will hopefully lift up their confidence as we start preparing for CIF playoffs.”
Piccoletti ended with four of the team’s eight goals in the win while Lemere had two and Devyn Clayton and Nemetz scored one apiece.
On the defensive end, Allison Banks registered 11 saves and Dugre picked up five steals.
Carpinteria will play two more games on Saturday as a part of the tournament.
Girls Soccer
Channel Islands 1, Carpinteria 0 (2OT)
The Warriors fell in double overtime to Channel Islands on Friday.
After both teams battled to a scoreless draw for the majority of the match, Channel Islands secured a corner kick in the final minute of overtime.
The kick floated into the box and Channel Islands came away with the final touch and the ball found the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
“This was a tough loss for the girls who put together such a great performance in tonight’s game, but that’s how the game sometimes goes,” Carpinteria coach Freddy Martinez said.
“With three tough games still on the schedule the girls will have to shake off this loss and get back to work next week.”
The Warriors (7-4-1, 4-4-1 CCL) will take on Hueneme on Wednesday.
