Carpinteria High boys water polo went 2-2 across two days at the Malibu Tournament over the weekend in Malibu.
The Warriors kicked off the weekend with victories over Oxnard and Newbury Park on Friday before falling to Malibu and Palisades on Saturday.
In the 17-4 rout of Oxnard, Ryder Shaw poured in a team-high six goals while both Cade McCallister and Brandyn Moore scored twice. Meanwhile, Junius Fedders tallied four goals and seven assists.
Carpinteria followed that up with a 14-12 win over Newbury Park in which the Warriors jumped out in front and never looked back, with Stefano Picoletti coming up with several clutch blocks down the stretch.
The Warriors then battled with Malibu in their first game on Saturday, but Malibu pulled away for a 15-10 win. Picoletti ended the game with 10 saves and three steals, while Shaw’s three goals paced the team.
In the final game of the weekend, Carpinteria High battled back from a late deficit but came up just short for an 8-7 loss to Palisades. Picoletti had another strong game, recording nine blocks.
“Our boys made up a lot of correctable mistakes from last week, and our focus has been controlling possession on both sides of the pool,” Carpinteria High head coach Russell Russo said. “They made some big strides and have a lot of potential, so I’m proud of them.”
The Warriors will take on Camarillo on Thursday.
San Marcos
The Royals went 1-3 in four games at the competitive Long Beach Poly Tournament over the weekend in Long Beach.
San Marcos began competition on Friday with a back-and-forth overtime loss at the hands of Clovis before bouncing back with a victory over Poway.
The Royals then rounded out their tournament by dropping games to Long Beach Wilson and La Jolla on Saturday.
Titus Fernandez shined in the cage for San Marcos, totaling 30 saves on the weekend, including four penalty blocks.
“Titus came up big for us in some critical moments and made key saves when we needed them most,” San Marcos head coach Peera Sukavivatanachai said.
“Ryder Wilson also had an outstanding weekend on both offensive and defensive sides of the pool. Against top-tier teams like La Jolla and LB Wilson, Ryder was resilient, played with a lot of heart, and rose to the challenge and opportunity to play elite-level water polo.”
The Royals will be off for next week before returning for a matchup against Torrey Pines on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at Elings Aquatic Center.
