The Carpinteria High boys tennis pairing of Servando Campuzano and Ethan Almgren was crowned Citrus Coast League Doubles champions on Wednesday.
Campuzano and Almgren took down Cooper Rose and Topher Hilling of Malibu in the doubles title match, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
“They both carried each other as the match ebbed and flowed,” Carpinteria High head coach Charles Bryant said of his top duo. “When one was struggling a bit, the other would step up and take control. I was so proud and happy they pulled it out in the end.
“They have been undefeated in league all season, and this was the perfect way to top it off.”
Meanwhile, Carpinteria High’s Edwin Hernandez ended as the singles runner-up after falling to Gael Parra of Hueneme in the championship, 6-2, 6-4.
“Edwin, for his part, was excellent,” Bryant said. “He stayed in the points, scrambling and making great defensive shot after shot… The match really was about who could move their opponent out of position and then hit the next ball for a winner.”
The Warrior doubles team of John Morrison and Tiago El-Aaidi rounded out the team’s showing by falling to Malibu’s Fin Wells and Noah Levin in the third-place match, 6-3, 6-3.
“I thought John and Tiago played really well,” Bryant said. “They stayed in control physically and mentally, making the Sharks earn their games.
“I was really happy with all of our performances today. I thought the Carpinteria players stepped up, win or lose, and made their opponents work for every point.”
Campuzano/Almgren and Hernandez will compete in the CIF-SS Sectionals on Thursday, May 21.
