Carpinteria softball hosted Hueneme Thursday in Citrus Coast League game “that got away from us pretty early” in a 7-1 loss, Warriors coach Matt Mora said.

Renata Martinez started in the circle for Carpinteria, allowing nine hits, seven runs, one walk and striking out three in 4.1 innings pitched. Ashlee Mora relieved Martinez in the fifth inning, allowing no runs, one hit, one walk and striking out one.

“Martinez did really well today; defensively it just wasn’t our day,” Mora said. “There were plays that we should have made that we didn’t, and that can take a pitcher out of the game quick. Lucky for us Martinez was able to hold them to three runs until the fourth inning, when they scored one more and in the fifth inning scoring three before Mora came in to get out of the inning.”

The Warriors got their only run in the bottom of the fifth, when junior Jessie Marquez doubled on 3-2 count, and junior Bella Velasquez followed with a double on a 0-2 count moving Marquez to third. Ashlee Mora hit a blooper pop fly that got down before the shortstop could make a grab at it and beat the throw to 1st, scoring Marquez.

The Warriors scattered five hits. Mora and Velasquez had multiple hits and Marquez one.

Carpinteria plays at Nordhoff away Friday for the final game of the week and last game against the Rangers this season.

The Warriors are now 4-8 in league play and 4-13-1 overall.
