Carpinteria High announced Tuesday that its spring season-opening football game at home against Fillmore on Friday night has been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

Coach Mario Robinson said last week that the coaching staff and players were excited about returning to play in the spring.

High school football in the county has not been played since the fall of 2019 due to the pandemic.

“We want to give the seniors the chance to finish out their high school football careers on a positive, and give the underclass an opportunity to have experience before we start back in the fall,” Robinson told Noozhawk.

Athletic Director Pat Cooney said the Warriors will return to action on Friday, March 26 at Nordhoff in Ojai.

The Warriors had a four-game schedule against Citrus Coast League opponents. Their only other home game is on Thursday, April 1 against Hueneme. They finish the abbreviated season on April 9 at Santa Paula.

There are four football games on the South Coast on Friday night: St. Bonaventure vs. Bishop Diego at La Playa Stadium; Santa Barbara High at San Marcos; Cabrillo at Dos Pueblos and Santa Ynez at Lompoc.
