Carpinteria scored the game’s first run in the first inning but then host Fillmore rattled off 11 answered runs over the next three frames on the way to an 11-2 victory over the Warriors in a Citrus Coast League game Wednesday.
Carpinteria’s final run came in the fift, when Erich Goebel hit a leadoff single and later scored on a single from Matt Muñoz.
Goebel led the Warriors with two hits. Beto Martinez tossed 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Joaquin Ramirez.
“Tough combination for us as Fillmore is clicking along on all cylinders and we are wound pretty tight,” Carpinteria coach Patrick Cooney said. “Players might be trying to do more than they are capable of, and it seems like we might have lost sight of the process. We’ll attempt to get back to the basic idea that we are playing a game, it’s supposed to be fun, and our players have some skills. Once we build some confidence and trust, we’ll probably surprise ourselves.”
The loss drops the Warriors to 2-5-1 in the CCL and 3-7-1 overall. Fillmore is 5-2 and 9-7. Carpinteria finishes the season series with the Flashes Friday at John Calderwood Field.
“The good part is that it’s really easy to find silver linings,” Cooney said. “The defense played really well on a rough surface, we turned two nice double plays, we didn’t give even one at bat away, and the young players are steadily improving in major roles.”
