Improvements along Carpinteria’s Franklin Creek Trail are underway, and the route is expected to remain temporarily closed through mid-November for construction.
The $2 million improvement project was originally slated for completion in June, but it faced delays after the review. The bid process also took longer than anticipated, according to Ryan Kintz, assistant city manager.
Improvements will include a new multiuse trail that will be 12 feet wide and 900 feet long, safety fencing along the creek, new lighting and updated landscaping, according to the city. It also will enhance street connections.
The project is fully funded through various grants, Noozhawk previously reported.
The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors approved funds for the project in 2024, and the Carpinteria Architectural Review Board approved the plans in 2025.
Planner Syndi Souter said during the 2025 meeting that the informal trail is used by the Santa Barbara County Flood Control District for maintenance access to Franklin Creek.
The trail also serves as a route for Aliso Elementary School students and parents, according to the city.
