It came down to Carpinteria’s Stone brothers in the singles finals of the Citrus Coast League individuals tennis tournament Tuesday, with big brother Austin prevailing over Max, 6-1, 6-2.

Both Austin and Max Stone qualify for the CIF-SS Sectionals on May 19 with the top-two finish, with Nordhoff’s Campbell Gaston as the alternate.

“It was just a quality match, as both players were relaxed and playing freely,” Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said. “There were some quick points, some long points, some incredible defending and many just well constructed points that were initiated with some booming serves by both players.

“They both handled this unique matchup like true professionals and were very complementary of each others shots and points,” Bryant added. “I even saw a little hug afterwards which warmed the hearts of all the fans watching the match.”

Both brothers won decisively in the semifinals against opponents from Nordhoff. No. 1 seed Austin Stone beat Rowan Gillooly 6-2, 6-1, while No. 2 seed Max Stone dispatched Gaston, 6-0, 6-0.

The doubles title was won by No. 1 seed Cole Everett and Gavin Johnson of Nordhoff, who beat No. 3 seed Adrien Lehman and Connor MacPherson of Malibu in the final, 6-3, 6-3. Both teams qualify for the CIF sectionals.
