After surrendering a 4-1 deficit after one inning, Carpinteria senior right-hander Issac Castillo and the defense settled in for a 14-4 win at Santa Paula Thursday in a Citrus Coast League game.
Castillo and catcher Diego Nieves kept the Cardinals off balance as they scattered six hits, one walk and struck out 4 in the complete game effort.
Offensively Carpinteria was led by Erich Goebel with three hits, including a double and a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored. Luke Lounsbury had a pair of hits, a pair of RBI and scored a pair of runs.
Castillo helped his own cause with two hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Matt Muñoz two singles, an RBI and two runs.
“It was great to see our fortune turn a bit today,” Warrior coach Pat Cooney said. “We had hit some balls hard for outs recently but today they fell in. We maintained a workmanlike approach to the whole game and made our own good luck.
“We can’t say enough about the battery and how Issac’s senior leadership set the tone. It’s late in the season, but the players are still committed to learning and improving. We took a step forward today.”
Carpinteria is 7-3 in CCL action, in second place just ahead of Santa Paula at 7-4. Malibu is in first place.
The Warriors play Fillmore in a two-game series beginning Tuesday at John Calderwood Field.
