A scoreless pitchers’ duel was broken in the bottom of the seventh inning when Carpinteria freshman Talon Trumble hit a walk-off single, scoring Warrior pitcher Issac Castillo to beat Nordhoff 1-0 on Thursday at home.

Castillo went the distance for the two-hit shutout, striking out six and walking just two. Nordhoff lefty Roman Mahler surrendered just four hits, two of them in the seventh, including Castillo’s lead-off single. Castillo advanced to second on a sacrifice from Beto Martinez before Trumble’s pinch-hit game-winner to center.

The game was the second pitchers’ duel between the two teams following Carpinteria’s 2-1 win Tuesday in Ojai. Carpinteria is now 6-2 overall and 5-1 in Citrus Coast League play, while Nordhoff is 0-9 and 0-7.

“It took the whole roster to grab the win, but it’s rare and exciting that Issac was able to notch the complete game shutout win on the mound and score the winning run,” Warrior coach Patrick Cooney said. “The games with Nordhoff were a grind, and coming away from the week with two one-run wins speaks to the improvement and mindset of the team. The great news is that we can play even better.”

Carpinteria plays Hueneme Tuesday and Thursday of next week at Calderwood Field.
