The Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA) has opened its new exhibit “Cassatt & Friends,” on view through Jan. 3.

“Come see ‘Cassatt & Friends,’ a new exhibition that offers an intimate look at the creative connections between drawing and printmaking among Mary Cassatt and her contemporaries,” organizers said.

While Cassatt is best known for her luminous paintings, she was also an accomplished printmaker, and SBMA’s permanent collection includes a number of her printed works.

“At the heart of the exhibition is “Simone in a White Bonnet Seated with Clasped Hands” (No.1), a unique counterproof created by dampening a pastel drawing and pressing it onto another sheet of paper to transfer the pigment and create a mirror image,” SBMA said.

Featuring works by Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Cézanne, and James McNeill Whistler, “Cassatt & Friends” reveals the tactile, hands-on processes behind these artists’ works, organizers said.

“The visible traces of the artists’ hand offer an intimate glimpse into their creative practices, and a striking contrast to the polished, mass-produced printed material of their time,” the museum said.
