After eight seasons at the helm, Cate boys basketball head coach Andy Gil is stepping down from his post to focus on his family life.
“It is and was a difficult decision to step away as I have been coaching high school basketball since 2010,” Gil said. “I want to thank the Cate Athletic Department, specifically AD Wade Ransom, Ben Soto, and Matt Drew, and Dave Soto from the Admissions Office for the support, camaraderie and friendship.
“Most importantly I want to thank my rock, a great person and coach, and the best assistant I could ask for, Joseph “Joe” Cordero. Joe and I have never missed the postseason when working together here at Cate since the 2016 season. I thank Cate for trusting me with my first head coaching position.”
Gil, who has children ages 2 and 5, will continue to coach them in the Santa Barbara community.
During his career with the Rams, Gil accumulated a total record of 94-51, including three trips to the CIF-SS Quarterfinals under his watch.
He also captured a Tri-Valley League championship during the 2021-22 season with a league record. He was also named the Tri-Valley League Coach of the Year.
In other seasons, Gil and Cate placed second in the league standings on four different occasions.
“Thank you to JV Coaches Jay Dorion and Brandon Alexander for developing our young players,” Gil said. “Thank you to the local Santa Barbara and Carpinteria Press for highlighting our amazing student-athletes at Cate. Thank you to Laura Moore and Frank Griffin and Bryan Rodriguez for always being able to talk basketball on campus.
“A special shoutout to Coaches Dave and Joseph Bregante whom I have known since 1994 and coached with them as an Assistant Coach at Santa Barbara High School from 2010-2014, they both encouraged me to apply to Cate.”
Cate School will begin their search for a new boys basketball head coach immediately.
“I wish the Cate Boys Basketball Team and Cate School continued success,” Gil said.
